Farewell Stompin’ Tom

Wearing his signature black cowboy hat, head and shoulders view of Stompin' Tom

“Stompin’ Tom” painted by my talented sister Liana Russwurm as a gift for our folks, Lynn and Shirley Russwurm.

Stompin’ Tom Connors
[February 9th 1936 ~ March 6, 2013]

There’s a sadness across this great land, a melancholy that transcends all of our differences as Canada mourns Stompin’ Tom Connors, the man who united Canada with his music in a way that no one else has ever done.

[reprinted from my “Visual Laurel” Tumblog]

With his signature piece of plywood (necessary to keep the stage in the small venues intact under the force of his stomping), consummate entertainer, Stompin’ Tom Connors played his way back and forth across Canada, learning our stories and fashioning them into music, like a troubador of old.

An Indie musician, a singer/songwriter, Tom self published his own music the hard way, long before there was an Internet to make such things relatively easy. He made himself into a superstar, one record sale at a time.

Stompin’ Tom Connors breathed new life into Canadian culture. He opened our eyes to the history and commonalities of this great nation, entertaining and educating us with his wit and wonder. He resurrected folk legends like (my personal favorite) Big Joe Mufferaw and shared our stories from Sudbury Saturday Night to the Black Donnelly’s Massacre and The Hockey Song.

He wrote this last letter to his fans, shared on his website:

“Hello friends,
“I want all my fans, past, present, or future, to know that without you, there would have not been any Stompin’ Tom.
“It was a long hard bumpy road, but this great country kept me inspired with it’s beauty, character, and spirit, driving me to keep marching on and devoted to sing about its people and places that make Canada the greatest country in the world.
“I must now pass the torch, to all of you, to help keep the Maple Leaf flying high, and be the Patriot Canada needs now and in the future.
“I humbly thank you all, one last time, for allowing me in your homes, I hope I continue to bring a little bit of cheer into your lives from the work I have done.

“Sincerely,
“Your Friend always,
“Stompin’ Tom Connors”

Rest in Peace, Stompin’ Tom Connors

Record Show Sunday

I remember accompanying Dad to a Hamilton Record Show, circa 1980, around the time he first began dealing in used vinyl records. He’s been buying and selling records in various ways ever since. For many years he hosted his own semi-annual Record Show and sale, first in Guelph, and later in Aberfoyle. And over the years he’s had retail outlets in several local towns including Elora, Fergus, Stratford and most recently, St. Jacobs.

Lynn chats about records at his Spring Tent Sale, 2010

Lynn has been conducting mail order record auctions throughout the year right from the start.  And lately he’s held several Giant Tent Sales in spring and fall.   But he’s talking about cutting out the record shows after this year, which means this Sunday may be his last ever record show as a vendor.   Of course, cutting back will give him more time to devote to writing his book about Canadian Country Music.

Lynn the Record Man at “The Record Booth”

Lynn will have a table at the Toronto Musical Collectables Show in Mississauga this Sunday, October 14th, 2012.   If you’re in the neighborhood, drop by and say hello!

Grassland tonight!

Beautiful weather, not even a hint of rain for the Grassland appearance in Gore Park, Elmira. Like all the shows in the series, it runs from 7-9:00 p.m.

The Park Gazebo that serves as a bandshell for Lynn Russwurm’s concert series is undergoing renovation, but it is servicable. I’ve been too busy to post more photos from the concerts this month, but I’ll try to work on that for August.

Canada Day Concert

This week’s Sunday Concert happens to fall on Canada Day.

Woolwich Township’s annual Canada Day celebration,  traditionally held in Gore Park, will run right up until 7:00pm.

This may cause this week’s excellent Brantford bluegrass band, “Grass Tax” to start a little late, but that won’t diminish the quality of their music.  Hope to see you there!

Great weather and great turn out at last week's Jimmy Phair concert in Elmira's Gore Park.
